Do we really need the World Cup in Russia?

Friends, today I want to share with you my thoughts on the construction of the stadium for the World Cup 2018 in Kaliningrad. It so happened that the next Sunday in Russia will be an election and the day before we were invited to the pre-election meeting with the candidate, to be held in a small district library. MP himself has not come, he was represented by his assistant. In the hall were not more than 10 people. After the official word and distributing booklets few people have asked to speak. They talked about the problems with public transport, the lack of apparatus for crushing kidney stones in the district hospital (it turns out he was there before) about the local history museum of North Mountain, what we ought to do about Aschman Park, which is good for dog walking, but bad for the people, of the crumbling houses of crumbling buildings, dating back to the Germans. In a timid remark that it would be good to make a track in the park was the answer - do not wait until 2018, the reconstruction of the park will be completed only after 5 years. And why until 2018? Yes, because now all the money and resources are spent on the construction of the stadium for the World Cup and other associated facilities.
One woman told a long sad story that has dragged on for many years, associated with intolerable conditions in her apartment, situated in an old German house. About an improperly repaired chimney in the apartment below, and now all the dust settles in hers. About improperly cleaned blockage in the sewer, breaking through a huge hole in the old ceramic pipe, and now all the sewage flow out. How she sought the assistance of the local deputies and from the town hall, but nothing has been achieved. How she called a direct line to Putin - demanded free legal assistance - received the highest resolution, and the local Chamber of Lawyers anyway denied. Listening to these stories, one might think, what evil MPs, lawyers and mayors, and what a good Putin - he ordered to provide free legal aid, and still builds the stadium, which is "somehow needed by someone". And in fact, the mayor's office and lawyers can and want to help, but there is no money to pay for unscheduled repairs and for a lawyer. But there is money to build the stadium. Is it necessary for us? Is it relly what we need?

Buona giornata .

  3. This is consistent with many countries around the world where they hold these games. Winter Olympics, Summer Olympics, you name it. Even when we had Katrina, they built a stadium so a sports game could be played there, and pegged it as lifting the morale of the community while many of them folks had been displaced to distance places. It's how they did it here when the Pope came. When it's about big bucks they will shut it down for one cause and ignore all the other causes that needed attending to.
Don't know why it's like that, maybe humans are just selfish and greedy and corrupt when they get into high places.

    1. Thank you dear Nana for your comment. You are right but all that stuff looks much more drastic when these events are held in such poor countries like Russia.

  7. Generally, these events seem like such a waste. There is a short economic boom, but in many cases the facilities built are unused afterwards and eventually fall to ruin. You see these things all over the internet.

It seems that the only purposes served are to gratify the egos of some politicians and to bring profits to their contractor friends who do the building. The locals only benefit temporarily and would the same money would benefit them more if spent in a more direct way.

I think events should be held in existing facilities where those holding the event can afford the extra security costs. The should stand on their own commercial merit without government assistance.
